Four Reasons Why I Love Living in Community!

Out of all of the places I could be in the world as a 21 year old Aussie, I found God asking me to live and serve at this YWAM base in Tauranga, New Zealand. I grew up as a somewhat normal child in suburbia- going to high school with plans of heading to University – be involved with a successful career, get married, serve at church, go on a few missions trips. But never once did I think that I was going to have the privilege of this becoming my life. Coming to YWAM, doing a DTS and joining the community was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life – here is why:

YWAM Community is:

Our YWAM community consists of 10-25 different nationalities at any given time during our Discipleship Training Schools. It’s such a joy to come to walk down our hallways and hear a variety of accents speaking English and discussing the difference in cultures. At Marine Reach, quite often we have international dinner nights in where students and staff from a particular nation would be able to get together and cook dinner from their homelands and give everyone a traditional experience. Recently we hosted an Island night that gave every a taste of what the Pacific Islands had to offer – (check out our blogpost about it here –!  I believe that every nation holds something unique about the character and nature of God. It’s such a blessing to be able to grow in a community where we see the out workings of that I often imagine that that is what it will be like in heaven!

Like-minded youthful community:

There is nothing like being able to grow in a loving and supporting community of believers who are youthful in spirit and whose hearts with burning with passion to live a life of righteousness and follow God. I attended a church almost all of my life, however it wasn’t until I came to YWAM where I was around a group of people who were open and transparent about their walks with Gods, their victories and struggles – people who wholeheartedly accepted me for who I was and loved me unconditionally and who GENUINELY wanted to lift me up and encourage me to grow deeper in God!

There is ALWAYS something to do. We live in community with a range of different ages and different cultures that all bring something to table that is different. Somedays, it may look like baking brownies and watching a movie or other days, it will look like going down our valley and building a bonfire – just being able to fellowship!

Spiritually Challenging:

This is one of the most important ones and one of my favourites. I like that growing in a YWAM community causes iron to sharpen iron (Proverbs 27:17). On this base, one of the YWAM values that I find most prevalent is 14. Value the Individual and 10. Function in teams. We have a way of valuing an individual’s relationship with God, but also each morning we come together to seek God in intercession, worship and ministry time corporately to lift up God. Which means that there is an open platform to share what God is revealing to us through His word and therefore encouraging us to step up and be challenged in a broader spectrum.
