We’ve just begun our October DTS here at Marine Reach in Tauranga New Zealand! We have 9 different nationalities represented in this group with young people coming from USA, Canada, Malaysia, Finland, Germany and more! It’s been amazing to watch everyone experience New Zealand for the first time as well as seeing what beautiful pieces of their own culture. One of my favourite things of serving at the base is being able to walk down the hallways at lunch time or before lectures and hear a variety of different languages and accents being spoken.

As a part of every DTS, we host a ceremony called a Powhiri. This is where we welcome the new students onto the sacred land that God has given us. This consists of two sides meeting – the Tangata Wheuna (Maori word for people of the land) and the guests side (students) who meeting a ceremony and exchange greetings. At Marine Reach, we have our very own Maori chief who lives on the land with us. He will often begin the event by making a speech about the history Here are some pictures of the Powhiri, where one our students – Samuel from Germany – presented a moving response of his thankfulness on behalf of the students. The ceremony is finished by completing a traditional Hongi – an intimate Maori greeting where people press their noses that illustrates the sharing of the breath of life.

The students have officially started their first week in lectures with Marty Emmett! He has been speaking on Lordship and Repentance.  They have spent the week reflecting on what it looks like to lay down your pre-conceived notions, thoughts and desires and follow him wholeheartedly! Part of that means getting rid of the fear and lies that we may be believing about unworthiness, not being good enough or being too much. I love watching God peel away the layers of our hearts to strengthened our identity in Him. There is so much power when we walk in who we were called to be, unreserved and unrestrained sons and daughters! Stay turned for more updates as we go deeper into the school!

Hebrews 12:1 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
