OVERVIEW

Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” - Matthew 20:25-28

Leadership in the kingdom of God doesn't work the same as it does in the world. In fact, Jesus' type of leadership operates out of a completely different paradigm and mindset than many of us are used to. Instead of leading by position, power, and control over others, Jesus led by building trust, connecting with people, and empowering them. His leadership - which started the most impacting movement in history - was built on INFLUENCE, which was the direct result of his great love for people and his commitment to truth.

At Marine Reach, we love to see young people be transformed and grow into confident, Christlike leaders through teaching, mentoring, and lots of hands-on experience. ALT is a 3-month program which provides an opportunity for you to intentionally invest in your leadership ability by engaging in all three of these areas!

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

Habitudes®: This is an incredible leadership development curriculum specifically designed to engage young people through images, relatable stories, and experiences. It is very interactive and presents leadership concepts in a way that is very easy to digest and remember. You will participate in one Habitudes lesson each week, and you will have a short reading assignment and activities to complete in your Habitudes workbook. Find out more on the Curriculum tab.

Reading: During the program, you will also read a book on leadership and provide a written summary of each chapter. Books may include In the Name of Jesus by Henri Nouwen, How to Lead When You're Not in Charge by Clay Scroggins, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell, and more.

Mentoring: One-on-one discipleship is deep within our DNA here at Marine Reach. In this track, you will be paired with a senior staff member who will meet with you on a bi-weekly basis to guide you in your relationship with God and your journey toward leadership.

Hands-on Experience: This program is about much more than just a theoretical approach to leadership. As you complete ALT, much of your learning and growth as a leader will take place through practical experience as you engage in leading DTS, a Second-level school, or as part of our ministry support team.

PREREQUISITES

To participate in this program, you must:

  • Have completed a Discipleship Training School (DTS) that Marine Reach will recognize.
  • Complete a volunteer staff application and be accepted to join Marine Reach's volunteer staff team, as serving with this team comprises the hands-on portion of the program.

Habitudes®

Habitudes is an image-based curriculum developed by Dr. Tim Elmore and his organization, Growing Leaders.

What makes Habitudes so effective isn't just the content (although it's amazing); it's how the content is communicated. Rather than present a lot of bullet points on PowerPoint slides, every leadership concept is encapsulated within A SINGLE IMAGE. Our brains remember images much better than text or ideas, so that after learning the concept merely seeing (or recalling) the image reminds you of the entire set of ideas that it represents!

Along with the images, Habitudes also uses videos, stories, and small group interaction to present the concepts and help each person apply them to him- or herself. It's not your normal lecture style of teaching.

During your ALT program, you will participate in Habitudes lessons from one of the following modules:

  • Habitudes for Self Leadership: The Art of Leading Yourself
  • Habitudes for Personal Influence: The Art of Connecting with Others
  • Habitudes for Leading Others: The Art of Life-Giving Leadership
  • Habitudes for Multiplying Leaders: The Art of Changing Culture
Moving through a module, you will complete 13 Habitudes lessons and your own personal Habitudes workbook, which includes reading, application questions, self-assessments, and goal setting activities.

"Tim Elmore is a great communicator. I enjoyed these images so much, I asked him to teach them to our entire staff." - Andy Stanley, Founder and Senior Pastor, North Point Community Church

"These images will tranform any young leader who is hungry to grow. I highly recommend them." - Josh McDowell, author
