The Tabernacle; a Place or a People?

“The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.” Exodus 33:11. What would it have been like to talk with God face to face? The Bible leaves out the details of what it was like inside the tent when God and Moses would talk, so we are left to imagine what it would be like to enjoy that intimate time with God. Would Moses have been on his face, prostrate before the Lord, or would he be constantly dancing for joy? We don’t know but we do know that Moses always left the tent changed by God, his face would glow from being in the presence of the Creator. What really strikes me about this verse is that it says Joshua would not leave the tent. The Bible doesn’t actually tell us why Joshua wouldn’t leave but I would like to think it was because he was just so hungry for God that leaving His presence didn’t make sense, and the Lord used that time to train Joshua for the leadership role he would take in the future. Imagine being able to enter the presence of God! All you had to do back then was walk into a tent, but who has it better? Us now or Moses and Joshua then?

Something that I have been learning the past few months is that my geographical location no longer matters when I want to spend time with God. I always thought that I had to be in church or out in the prayer chapel to be in the presence of the King, and yes, sometime it may be a little easier to feel His presence when we are surrounded with worship or when we are in a room soaked in prayer, but because of what Jesus did on the cross, we have FULL access to God no matter where we are. When we are in the hardest and darkest places the glow of the Lord’s presences does not depart from us.

The tabernacle is no longer a place where we have to go, but a group of people that carry the presence of the Lord, His holy people, a nation of priests. You are the temple and God dwells in you. No longer do you have to search of the place where His name is, but you can call out to Him and He promises meet you. In any place you can speak with the Lord as Moses did, praising Him to His face, asking questions, and strategizing against the enemy of your soul. The best part is you can also be like Joshua, all the time. You never have to leave His presence, because you aren’t in the tent, but the tent is in you.
